Durufle – Requiem — Bernstein – Chichester Psalms – Nottingham Bach Choir
June 21, 2025 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Our 70th anniversary season closes with two great twentieth century choral works: Duruflé’s 1947 setting of the Requiem is closely based on the traditional plainsong of the funeral mass. The work is hugely evocative, combining ancient melodies with Duruflé’s sumptuous twentieth-century harmonic language. Leonard Bernstein was commissioned by Walter Hussey (Dean of Chichester Cathedral) to write a setting of assorted psalm texts for performance at the 1965 Chichester Festival. The Dean’s letter to Bernstein mentions that “many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of West Side Story about the music”. Come and hear this intriguing juxtaposition of ideas… and join us for complimentary tea, coffee and cake to round off a summer’s afternoon of music!
