Light Night, 2018

Last night was Light Night -the free, family-friendly, Nottingham-based annual event during which the heart of the city lights up in enchanting and magical ways. This year, the event was celebrating its tenth anniversary.

St. Mary’s played its part in proceedings by providing a wide variety of light-based installations and displays, with the choir chiming in every forty minutes or so with a different ‘set’ of extravagant polyphony pieces. They ranged from the “spiky” Leighton to the “silky” Byrd, with much in between!

Young and old trooped in and out through the West Door all evening, with everyone seeming to enjoy the light spectacle in the glorious surroundings, despite the bitter cold outside (and maybe partly because of the generous warmth inside!)

In fact, over 4000 people attended the event at the church, making it one of the most popular St. Mary events of the year. Pleasingly, the ‘lights and buckets’ installation in the North Transept was able to raise over £1600 for Emmanuel House during the course of the evening.

A selection of photos taken on the night is now available over at our Galleries page: it’s a rare chance to see St. Mary’s in an entirely new light (pun intended)!

Dr. Geoffrey Walker – An Autobiography

This week, we pay our respects to Dr. Geoffrey Walker by way of a memorial service on Thursday 15th February (to which all are invited, of course).

In that spirit of memorialisation of the much loved, we are most grateful to Biddy for giving us permission to share Geoffrey’s autobiography -first written in 2009- with everyone who cares to click on this link.

The document is a PDF and is less than 1MB in size.

Welcome, George!

George William Mills was baptised on Sunday 4th February: an occasion of much joy for all who were present.

Like the rather-beautiful Christening cake (decorated with matching St. Mary’s icing motifs) that was served afterwards, the service was lovely: the parents behaved themselves well for the most part… and there wasn’t a peep out of George himself, either!

Welcome George: you are already a treasured addition to the St. Mary’s family and we look forward to your delightfully well-behaved attendance in the months and years to come.

God bless you and your entire family.

ding, dong… bang!

A section of internal sound-control wall collapsed in the bell tower some time last week. The picture to the left was the rather spectacular result!

Surprisingly, perhaps, it looks worse than it is: the bells themselves were entirely unscathed, despite initial appearances.  Unfortunately, though, three of the wooden wheels needed to swing them to ring were broken. They are now in the world-renowned hands of Taylors of Loughborough bell foundry for repair.

Rebuilding the sound-control wall, originally constructed in the 1970s, may be a slightly trickier proposition because of the need to comply with the conditions governing repairs to historic buildings. However, repair work will begin as soon as possible.

All of this means that the wonderful ring of 12 bells in St. Mary’s Church tower will be silent for at least the next few weeks. We hope to hear them in full peal before too long, though.

Special Meetings – Advanced Notice

A Special Vestry Meeting and a Special Parochial Church Meeting will be held on Sunday 25th February 2018 at noon in St Mary’s Church for the election of:

  • 2 church wardens;
  • 9 representatives of the laity to the parochial church council;
  • 2 parish representatives for Deanery Synod

The meetings will also seek to appoint an auditor.

Formal notices giving full details are in the South Porch and forms for the nomination of churchwardens, council members and deanery synod representatives are now available in church. When completed forms should be put in the box provided or handed to a churchwarden.

Interment Service Mrs Betty Ellis

We sadly advise that Mrs. Betty Ellis, who worshipped at St. Mary’s for many years, passed away, peacefully in her sleep, on January 14th at her nursing home in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Accordingly, after the morning service on Sunday, 11th February, her ashes will be interred in the Garden of Remembrance, alongside those of her late husband, Roy, a former Churchwarden of St. Mary’s.

There will be a procession to the Garden at the end of the Eucharist service and a Nunc Dimitis will be sung during the interment. All are welcome.

Rev. Tom Gillum – An Update

A short note to confirm that Rev. Tom Gillum, presently our Vicar Designate, will be made Vicar of St Mary’s at a special service in the church by Bishop Paul on Sunday 18th March at 4:00 pm.

Please pray for Tom and for the future life and ministry of the parish.

Memorial Service Dr Geoffrey Walker

We wish to give advance notice that a memorial service for Dr. Geoffrey Walker will be held at St Mary’s on Thursday, 15th February at 3.00 pm.

A reception will be held afterwards at the Lace Market Hotel and anyone wishing to attend it are asked to add their names to the list available in the south porch.

Generate Nottingham

The next Generate event is taking place in Nottingham on Sunday, February 4th at 6.00pm until 8pm at The Church on Rise Park,  Revelstoke Way, Nottingham, NG5 5EB

There will be great food, competitions, worship and interactive Bible teaching, so it sounds like fun. At the last event, back in December, over 70 young people and leaders were there, from all across Nottingham; the next event therefore has something to live up to!
