The list of clergy is taken from three principal sources.

The manuscript of James Torre of York (who died in 1699), lists the clergy numbered 1 to 42.
The parish registers, which begin in 1566.
Extracts from Calendars of Patent Rolls, 1290 to 1374

The numbering system from 43 onwards follows that used in the Torre manuscript. The currently accepted list of clergy as displayed in the church under this numbering system appears to contain the following errors and omissions.

The omission of some thirteenth century appointments, Philip de Norhamptone, Robert Adinburg, William de Birley and Richard de Notingham.
Omission and duplication which may be solved by reference to the Calendars of Patent Rolls for 1357. The appointment of John Chaterez is omitted in the Torre manuscript, and the succeeding vicar appears twice, first as John Lorymer, and then as John de Hoveden. It would appear that John Lorymer and John de Hoveden are the same person.
